CHEAPO CHALKBOARDS
This was my first experience using chalkboard paint and I have to tell you… I completely understand why other DIYers have started painting everything with chalkboard paint. It covers so easily and is such an inspiring finish. I thought it would be fun to have a few chalkboards in our kitchen, but I didn’t want to spend a fortune. So, I looked around our house to see what I could find to paint. I came up with this ceramic metal-looking candle tray
one lone shabby chic plate charger
and this ugly decoration that my mom found at a yard sale (She knew it was ugly when she bought it. She recognized it had pretty lines and knew that we could make something with it).
I lightly sanded them with a fine grit sanding paper and then just brushed on the chalkboard paint. Once it dried, I hung them on our kitchen wall… and presto… a message center!
And now, of course, I’m looking around the house with new eyes… What else could I paint with this stuff???

Right now we’re using the chalkboards for scripture memory. Here’s what we’re currently working on:

I went out and bought 3 silver serving plates at the dollar store for this project. Ive never sanded anything in my life. Ive googled but have some up empty since im not really sure what these cheap plates are actually made of. Can you help? Do i sand only the flat face or the borders as well? Do i go over it lightly with the sand paper or with pressure? Please help!
*one more question did you use a foam brush?
Hi! Just wanted to let you know that I love this idea and that I’ve linked to it in a post on my blog!
LOVE LOVE LOVE this! Thank you so much for sharing–you have inspired me to try!!
Your chalkboards are so cute! I love how you have hung them up with the ribbon. I hope it’s okay, I couldn’t resist featuring them in my chalkboard crafts round-up. You can see it here:

Thank you so much for sharing these!
Thanks! I love all of the great chalkboard ideas you’ve compiled!
We’ve been making chalkboards using the spray paint. I’ve been getting mine at the Michael’s Craft Store. Spray works MUCH better! No lines…very smooth!
[...] it! Super easy and such a great idea. Originally posted by Brooke from Sweet Mint Studios and modified by myself. I am still on the search for a bigger one to place into the middle. Just [...]
Very cute!!!!! Do you have a favorite brand of chalkbd paint?
I just bought the brand sold at Home Depot… there was only one option.
Where do you find the chalk board paint?
I bought it at Home Depot, but I think you can find it at just about any craft store now too.
what chalkboard paint did you use? and what kind of brush did you apply with??
Thanks!
Chalkboard paint from Home Depot and a cheap foam paint brush.
I LOVE this idea but I think I will use the metal charger idea and paint just the middle leaving the edges silver then place on wall in my soon to be chalkboard kids bathroom. This is going to look awesome!

These are so cute!
How did you get the ribbons to attached to the trays? I tried hot glue, but they fell off after a few days
I used 3M strips to hang the trays on the wall. The ribbons are really just for looks; they don’t support the weight of the trays.
I bought some trays at Goodwill today and some spray chalkboard paint – do you think it will still work?
I don’t know. I’ve never tried the spray chalkboard paint! Good luck!
How did you fasten the ribbon on the bottom two?
I am a resident assistant at my college and we are required to have something on our door that says where we are at all time, needless to say when I brought this to school all of my fellow RA’s were super jealous and we are making more next week!
After I painted the tray I wrote on it with a paint pen “”where’s you RA?” and bellow it I can write with chalk whatever I want! Super Cheap too, I only spent 20 dollars on the whole project!
Love this! How did you attach the bows to the back of the trays, hot glue, gorilla glue, etc?
I actually used 3M adhesives. They’re very strong!
Love this~! I would have thought you would need primer… This sounds so easy, tfs!
Visiting from Tip Junkie – this is such an awesome idea. I love too, that the metal trays are magnetic too! Oh, you have me thinking now!
This is absolutely wonderful! I love it! Great touch with the ribbons. It really sets the design well. Definitely doing this in my house soon!
These are adorable!! I think I must try this chalk board paint I continue to hear about!!
Fab idea!!! Is the middle one more of a table mat? Do they have to be metal to use the chalk board pain on? SO FUN….Thanks for sharing!
I love this idea. I really need to try this. I will definitely be looking for this the next time I go to a thrift store.
LOVE these! What a lovely display!
I LOVE this. It is a very cute and creative idea. I could see something like this in my house. Thanks for sharing.
